An ode to facebook

it may sound really hypocritical..

the whole culture...the so called facebook...orkut...tagged....and more recently twitter culture.

had an account once, and had to delete it. i feel like i am saved.. feel like i said no to drugs.. feel like i overcame the peer pressure.

when orkut was on the MTV youth icon, i was really impressed... i still think that networking sites are based on an amazing concept.. connecting people... that's what nokia did and look...once finland's struggling gum boot company is now one of the world's leading mobile company.

i joined orkut.. made a profile...but a lot has evolved since then..
you could only upload like 10 pics in all...you know what i mean...comparing it with today's orkut.. it was 1970's sports mustang...sturdy sexy and reliable...but too much on resources...old school..

yeah..so this evolution process has now completely changed it.
now .. you can update your status (have no clue why it's there)...any of your friends who change anything in their profile...it's on your face like aaj tak finding the location of a mole in sudan or somewhere..

so it ultimately comes down to us..how we use it.
one guy would care a rat's ass on this change... and his life would continue as it was going on and then the other guy would sing hallelujah...he's found the elixr of life..
now the moment he farts...his status MUST be updated...and i repeat...MUST be updated
"Farted in front of my girlfriend's mother and she found out that im a nonvegetarian" now that's talent..

i mean...come on.. it is completely ok to be a part of this whole gibberjam...but then again..
how deep do you wanna be stuck into it..

why i said so? here's an example.
cultures are different every 200kms..languages are different..
arnold schwazznegger ( i hope i spelt it right) was at the body building competition when he got the news of his father's sudden demise...he chose to finish the competition..he did win though..
now indian culture might not accept it but again..it's ok....whatever...

i came across a facebook profile where a person had posted an update "i miss u mum..may your soul rest in peace" 2 days after the mother had actually passed away...
some might say that we should now accept internet as our integral part of life and if one choses to express their gratitude there...so be it...

anyway..
it's totally upto you
you chose your threshold..
but i must admit..
facebook succeeded in selling us the idea that if you fart...let the world know

  2. yeah praveen.. i said at the beginning...it may sound hypocritical...
getting a new haircut and sharing it with friends is something different from bursting a pimple on your inner thigh and letting the whole world know about it..

there was an article in papers a few days ago on a girl who committed suicide cuz due to some bizzarre miscomunication her friend list got from 270 to 200..
    welcome to the facebook culture

  3. if u fart and do wish the world to knw then it gives the freedom to tell te whole. just adds a dimension to what you can do. every one is encouraged to express themselves. and if a person did sighed abut his mothers demise it way be a mode to reach out to people and say i am lonely. it would be utterly nonsensical if his mother hasnt actually died!! besides these sites have all the setiings u can resort to shut as much as u wish and c all u want. just like anything in the world. but i agree on one front. addiction of it is bad. but too much of the best of thing is bad. like sleeping.nad the girl committing suicide because her friends list depleted was pehaps so disturbed neways that she was just looking for an excuse to end her life. its all cool brother. everything boils down to the balance u achieve in ur personal life. thats all.
fantastic blog btw. looking fwd to the next one. kudos.

  5. first...thanks to prafull..raj and praveen...for your comments..

it seems that the discussion is moving towards farts...dont get me wrong...it is one of favorite topics as well... but it is only a metaphor which should be used once or twice...not more than that...lest is would not remain a metaphor but the topic of discussion itself...

  6. Anks,

Facebook is cool as it connects people who otherwise would have lost touch, but its also just a marketing ploy. Yeah, it's better when people have an interesting profile comment. Interesting use of the word 'gibberjam'?

Yeah, I spose the internet is an integral part of life now, though due to the accessibility of information it is not very personal.

So where do you live in Moorooka? I used to live there near the Woolworths when I was 19. I heard there is some kind of African restaurant there you guys should check out.

Toowoomba is cold and quite unmulticultural, but I'm surviving.

    Cheers,
    Gin
